Description

This role is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of African immigrant and refugee youth and their families while working within a dynamic and supportive team environment. The Extended Learning and Enrichment Coordinator will lead ARIO’s Homework Club and Civic
Engagement Initiatives, ensuring students receive consistent academic support and enrichment opportunities throughout the school year. This role will coordinate a structured homework club three days a week, where staff and volunteer teachers provide tutoring in core subjects to 15-20 students per session, supporting 100 unduplicated youth annually. The coordinator will also
organize quarterly service-learning and civic engagement opportunities, empowering students to develop leadership skills and strengthen their connection to the community.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Bilingual/Bicultural proficiency (English/Maay-Maay/Swahili/Somali... preferred).
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to African immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Strong skills in community outreach, cultural programming, and workshop facilitation.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with youth, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends to accommodate family schedules.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance coverage.

  • Education and Experience
  • Associate Degree (Bachelor’s preferred) in Education, Social Work, Community Development, or a related field.
  • Experience in teaching, tutoring, or youth development programs.
  • Experience working with diverse youth populations and immigrant/refugee communities.
Working Conditions

  • Evening availability required (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, two-hour sessions
during the school year).
  • Occasional weekend events for civic engagement and service-learning opportunities.
  • Travel required for student outreach, school visits, and community partner coordination.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
Homework Club Coordination
● Organize and oversee a structured Homework Club three days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, two-hour sessions during the school year).
  • Ensure tutoring in math, reading, science, and other core subjects is available to students.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer tutors and staff, fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Provide academic coaching and individualized support to enhance student
understanding and performance.
● Ensure transportation, snacks, and necessary resources are available for participating students.

Service-Learning and Civic Engagement

● Plan and coordinate quarterly service-learning and civic engagement activities that
encourage students to give back to their communities.
● Partner with local organizations, schools, and community leaders to create meaningful enrichment experiences.
● Foster youth leadership development through volunteerism and civic responsibility
initiatives.
● Organize volunteering, sports, and extracurricular engagement opportunities, helping students build well-rounded leadership experiences.

Program Monitoring and Reporting

● Track and assess student progress and attendance, ensuring the program meets participation and impact goals.
● Collect feedback from students, parents, and tutors to continually improve programming.
● Maintain detailed program records and submit reports to the Program Manager on outcomes and areas for growth.

Community Collaboration and Advocacy

● Build and maintain partnerships with schools, community organizations, and service providers to expand resources for students.
● Act as a liaison between families, educators, and ARIO, ensuring alignment with students' academic needs.
● Advocate for educational equity and access to learning resources for African immigrant and refugee youth.

Additional Responsibilities
● Collaborate with the Program Manager and Team to develop program strategy and cultivate and manage key relationships with families and funding partners.
● Meet regularly with the Program Manager for training, feedback and coaching.
● Meet regularly with the Program Manager and team members to ensure compliance with project deliverables
● Advocate for systemic and policy change, including access to community resources most needed by program participants: food, housing, health care, and more.
